"An Irish blacksmith named Jack, a drunken miser, had the misfortune to meet the Devil in a pub, some say on Halloween night. Jack had drunk too much and was about to fall into the hands of the devil, when he managed to cheat him by offering his soul to the Devil in exchange for one last drink. The Devil turned himself into a sixpence to pay the bartender, but Jack quickly put in his purse. Because Jack had a silver cross, the Devil could not return to its original form. Jack let the Devil go only if that payments promised not to claim his soul for the next 10 years. The Devil agreed.
Ten years later Jack came across while walking along a country road. The Devil wanted to collect his soul, but Jack, thinking quickly, said: "I will come, but before you get me an apple from that tree?". The Devil, thinking he had nothing to lose, jumped on Jack's shoulders to take the apple. Jack pulled out a knife and carved a cross on the tree trunk. This left the Devil in the air, unable to obtain Jack or his soul. Jack made him promise never to return to reclaim his soul and, seeing no way out, the Devil agreed. No one knows how the Devil managed to return back to earth!
When Jack finally died years later, he was not admitted into heaven because of his dissolute life, to be drunk and crook. When he went to the entrance to Hell, the Devil sent him back because he had promised never to take Jack's soul. "But where can I go?" Asked Jack. "Back where you came from!" Replied the Devil. But the way back was windy and dark. Jack begged the Devil to give him a light to find the right way and the Devil, gesture, threw a burning coal from the fire of hell. To illuminate the path and to keep it off the wind Jack put it in a turnip he was eating. Since then, Jack was condemned to wander in darkness with his lantern until Judgement Day. Jack of the lantern (Jack O'Lantern) since it was the symbol of a damned soul. "-Taken from www.halloweenight.it
